Nationality / Residence: France / based in France Field: photography, drawing, installation Combining Naju’s natural dyeing tradition and textile processes such as bundle dyeing with photographs taken on site to create photo- and fiber-based work. Born in 1982 in Paris, Isabelle Chapuis developed an early artistic sensitivity, nurtured by dance and drawings of nude live models, which rooted her work in a deep exploration of the human body. She graduated in art direction from Penninghen in 2005 and chose photography as her medium of expression. As a visual artist-photographer, she examines the body as a language in its own voice, carrying memory, traces, and sensitive narratives. A curiosity about the ways we exist in the world lies at the heart of her work. She regularly undertakes long journeys, which serve as essential sources of inspiration and inquiry. Isabelle Chapuis won the Picto Prize in 2010. Two years later, her work received the Bourse du Talent award and was exhibited at the Bibliothèque nationale de France François Mitterrand, which incorporated it into its photographic collection. Since then, her work has been regularly exhibited in galleries and institutions, including the Centre d’art La Maladrerie Saint-Lazare (Beauvais, 2025), the Salon Approche (Paris, 2024), the Rencontres d’Arles festival (2023), Galerie Analix Forever (Geneva, 2023), the Les Femmes s’exposent festival (Houlgate, 2023), 110 Galerie (Paris, 2022), Palais Galliera (Paris, 2018), the Planches Contact festival (Deauville, 2018), the Grand Musée du Parfum (Paris, 2016), and the Centre d’Art Contemporain du Château des Adhémar (Montélimar, 2016). Her work has also been exhibited in the United States at Espace Snap (2015), as well as in Asia at the Daegu Photo Biennale (South Korea, 2023), Galerie Paris 1839 (Hong Kong, 2016), as part of the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment (China, 2016), and at French May (Hong Kong, 2013). In 2022, she published her first book, Vivant, Le sacre du corps, shortlisted for the Author’s Book Award at the Rencontres d’Arles and awarded the HiP Prize. Isabelle Chapuis was the associated artist for the 2024/25 season of the Opéra d’Avignon and is currently in residence at the artists’ residency La Ruche in Paris.
